Gubelin began in 1885 in Berlin when Jakob and his wife started a collaboration between other famous watch making firms like Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Audemars Piguet. They were to make watches specifically for visitors to Lucerne who had money to spend on jewelry and watches.
The resulting 'Gubelin Collection' as it was known consisted of many different types of watch designs; round, rectangular, complicated and plain; there was something for everyone. They made some spectacular moon phase triple-date wristwatches that today are beginning to command respectable prices, and although they are still affordable I think prices are on the way up.
Some other famous watches from the company are the 'Ipso-Matic', made around 1950 it is an automatic fairly plain looking watch as well as many rectangular designs including complications. Today the Company still makes good quality wrist watches, including the 'Flamenco' automatic range, a great looking automatic chronograph.
